The highly anticipated seventh season of HBO’s Game of Thrones is merely days away, and we can hardly contain ourselves! Will we have another Stark reunion? Will Cersei destroy everyone? Will Daenerys actually make it to Westeros? These questions have kept us up for months, and we can’t wait for the answers (and the drama)!
Like any fangirl (or fanboy), we’re planning on inviting all of our friends over to join us for the perfect premiere party. Read on to discover our tips on how to throw an epic Game of Thrones viewing party.
DECOR & MUSIC:
Set the mood for your medieval viewing extravaganza with lots metal and wood accents, an abundance of flickering candles, fur throws or pillows, 3D dragon wall art, and even some of your very own dragon eggs!
Of course, it wouldn’t be a party without the iconic music that makes the show so great! You can find soundtracks from previous seasons and Game of Thrones inspired playlists on multiple streaming platforms, including Amazon, Spotify, and Pandora. If you’re planning on playing music from your phone, impress your friends with a cool phone stand like this mini throne for your phone (available on Etsy).

You can also surprise your guests by decking out your porcelain throne with this iron inspired wall decal from Word Factory Design. Although it’s definitely impressive, we’re guessing that the throne room will be pretty empty until the episode concludes!

Don’t forget to stop by your local thrift stores before the party to find great deals on mix and match glass or metal goblets, decanters, and serving trays. Incorporating these fun, antique vessels and serve ware will transport your guests to the Middle Ages while they indulge in your bounty of snacks and spirits.
For refreshments, stock up on your favorite ale, wine, mead (a fermented mixture of honey and water often consumed in medieval times), and plenty of non-alcoholic options.
If you want to go all out and purchase GOT themed beer and wine, we have some suggestions that are right up your alley! We’re particularly obsessed with all of Brewery Ommegang’s Game of Thrones themed brews, perfect for any occasion and readily available at World Market locations nationwide. We suggest trying their newest release, “Bend the Knee” – a golden honey ale that even The Hound would enjoy!
For those who aren’t malt or hops lovers, you can also find Game of Thrones inspired wines. With three varieties available, these nectars are sure to appeal to any palette.
If you or your guests prefer cocktails, aheapingspoonful.com created and shared recipes for “Ten Game of Thrones Cocktails,” each representing a character or group of characters from the series. As a bonus, five more recipes were added (linked in the original post) so that no matter who your favorite character is (or was…), you can imbibe and indulge in his or her honor!

Whatever you choose to drink (non-alcoholic beverages included), make sure to use your favorite Game of Thrones inspired glass or goblet. You can catch us with a stemless wine glass (in true Tyrion style), or a Mother of Dragons coffee mug (available on Etsy) – long live Khalessi!
There are plenty of ways to get creative with your GOT grub. If you want to go the authentic route, you can serve up dishes inspired by meals that you would find throughout the Seven Kingdoms. If indulging in Sansa Stark’s favorite food (lemon cakes!) sounds like a dream to you, check out A Feast of Ice and Fire: The Official Game of Thrones Companion Cookbook, available on Amazon.
If you don’t want to spring for the cookbook, no sweat! Load up your party spread with fresh breads, a charcuterie board, a mixture of dried and sliced fresh fruits, a selection of cheese and spreads, or even an oven roasted chicken. We’re planning on serving some Frey Pie for the premiere (without any Frey body parts of course).

Alternatively, you could go with a more modern menu inspired by the characters and elements of the show. Have fun with it and feel free to incorporate a little bit of humor (you have to laugh sometimes, right? Ya never know when your favorite character is gonna get the axe – quite literally). Add a little farce to the food selection by serving snacks like “hodoritos,” or chips and “sansalsa.”

For dessert, whip up your favorite kind of cupcakes (is revenge a flavor?), and decorate them with these house sigil themed cupcake toppers (or make your own with this free printable). You’ll know where the battle lines fall after seeing which cupcakes your friends take!

If you’re in the spirit dress up and sport your shiniest suit of armor or your thickest fur coat (note: winter may be coming, but last time we checked, fur might be a little out of season in July), we say go for it! However, if you and your guests don’t have any medieval frocks or spare crowns in your closets, fear not. There are plenty of great shirts available on Etsy or the HBO store. Or, try your hand at getting crafty and DIY your own gear! You can even find great apparel for the littlest wildlings in your family, like this adorable onesie from Up North Tees!
Clothing isn’t the only way to really get into character. Give each of your party guests (yourself included) a GOT inspired name using one of Buzzfeed’s Game Of Thrones Name Generators – click here to use the chart or take the quiz! Challenge yourself and your guests to only use your new names for the rest of the night – whoever slips up the least wins!
Before it’s finally time to start the episode (!!!), set some house rules with your party guests. Do you want any conversation during the show? Will you be pausing for bathroom breaks? Make sure to settle upon some guidelines that best fit your group, allowing everyone to enjoy the grit and drama that is sure to be packed into the premiere. Remember to refill your drinks, load up your plates, and hit the porcelain throne one last time before settling in to start the show. We’ll be snuggling on the couch with our house sigil blanket – a necessity not just for the premiere, but for every Sunday viewing party!
