Celebrating Seven Years of Off the Grid

By: Kelly Kruger

June 24th, 2017 marked the 7th birthday of Off the Grid, a nomadic street food market that hosts more than 50 events weekly throughout the Bay Area & boasts the title of the largest gathering of food trucks in the country (wow!).

Despite Friday evening’s overcast weather and cooler temps, crowds turned out by the bunches for a birthday celebration, Off the Grid style! Let me tell you, we would have been sorely disappointed to miss out on this smorgasbord of culinary delights, craft elixirs, and entertainment.

The market’s offerings included a diverse range of flavors, culinary perspectives, and guilty indulgences (hello, doughnuts!). We only wish that our stomachs and wallets (although everything is reasonably priced) could accommodate a taste of everything! Off the Grid has an impressive and lengthy line-up of vendors that regularly rotate through its markets, ensuring that there is something for everyone and drawing the crowds back for more each week. You can scope out the vendors that will be participating at your favorite locations each week (and create a plan of attack) here.

But hey, a party isn’t a party without ambiance and entertainment! Patrons of the birthday bash delighted in new finds and old favorites under glowing lanterns and market lights (just adjacent to the Bay) while enjoying performances by DJ Khlor, Lion Dancers from Yao Kung Moon, and Brass Band Mission.  We have to say that we were wholly impressed by all of it – the combination of yummy bites, refreshing drinks, and Michael Jackson hits playing over the speakers definitely had us dancing. You can find a live DJ spinning tunes every Friday from 5-7 pm and a live band from 8-10 pm. To check out the weekly music schedule, click here.

Between the food, the entertainment, and the pop up tiki bar by Rye on the Road, it’s hard to say what our favorite part of the celebration was. Did we mention the colorful party hats? You bet they had party hats.

If you missed out on the birthday celebration, never fear! We’ve included a few drool-worthy pictures below. Plus, whether you are celebrating a birthday of your own, going out for date night, or gathering with friends to kick off the weekend, you can check out Off the Grid at The Fort Mason Center for the Arts every Friday between 5 and 10 pm through October 22nd.  It’s safe to say that we’ll be going back again and again all summer long!

Fort Mason Center is located at 2 Marina Blvd, San Francisco, CA 94123. For more information and answers to commonly asked questions about Off the Grid at Fort Mason Center, visit offthegrid.com/fmcfaq.  For a list of other Off the Grid locations, click here.
